Description

This Securit white plastic louvre vent is a 9 x 3 inch (approximately 229 x 76mm) ventilation cover, sized to fit a single brick course airbrick opening, plaster vent frame, or door. The angled louvre slats allow background air to pass through in both directions while shedding wind driven rain and keeping out larger debris, leaves, and insects from the wall or sub floor void behind it.

Made from durable white plastic, this louvre vent will not rust or corrode and needs no repainting, which is why it is such a widely used, low cost option for airbrick and plaster vent covers on UK homes, sheds, and outbuildings. It comes fitted with a fixed flyscreen that is riveted permanently into the frame, so flies and larger insects are kept out while the mesh can still be wiped clean in place. This vent is not suitable for venting gas appliances or flues, it is intended for general background ventilation only.

Key Features

  • Size: 9 x 3 inch (approximately 229 x 76mm) plastic louvre vent cover
  • Free air space of 4400 sq mm, the actual open area through which air can pass
  • Fixed, non removable flyscreen keeps out flies and larger insects
  • White plastic construction, will not rust and needs no painting
  • Not suitable for venting gas appliances
  • Suitable for both domestic and commercial ventilation projects

How to Use / How to Fit

To replace an existing airbrick cover, unscrew or unclip the old louvre vent from the airbrick or terracotta frame and fit this one in its place using the same fixing holes. This is the quickest option and usually needs no work on the brickwork itself.

To fit this vent into a new single brick course opening, chase or drill out the mortar to the correct size, bed the vent into fresh mortar, tap it flush with the wall face, then point around the edge once the mortar has gone off so it matches the surrounding brickwork. Fit the vent with the slats angled downward and outward so that rain is shed away from the wall rather than drawn inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a louvre vent on my wall?
A louvre vent supplies background ventilation to a room or, more commonly, to the sub floor void beneath a suspended timber floor. Without enough background ventilation, moisture builds up under the floor and can lead to condensation, mould, and eventually timber rot in the joists.

Do louvre vents leak?
No, not when properly fitted. The angled slats are specifically shaped to shed wind driven rain away from the opening while still letting air pass through. Any leaking is almost always down to poor bedding or pointing around the vent rather than the vent design.

How do louvre vents work?
The slats sit at an angle of roughly 30 to 45 degrees, which allows air to flow freely through the gaps in both directions while blocking rain, leaves, and larger debris from being driven straight through the opening.

Will this louvre vent keep out mice?
The fixed flyscreen is designed to stop flies and larger insects, it will not stop mice. A separate fine rodent mesh is needed if keeping mice out is a specific concern for this opening.
