Description
Description
Johnstone's Paint For Radiators in White Satin is a brush-applied radiator enamel that gives steel and cast iron radiators a smooth, soft-sheen finish, a popular alternative to gloss for anyone who prefers a subtler look. This 250ml tin is a convenient size for a single radiator, and the satin finish is formulated to withstand the heat a working radiator produces.
Key Features
- Soft satin white finish that is less reflective than gloss
- Specially formulated radiator enamel, not a general-purpose paint
- Brush application for full control around panels, valves and pipework
- Good flow and levelling to minimise visible brush marks
- Heat resistant formula suited to normal domestic radiator temperatures
- Suitable for steel and cast iron radiators, pipes and towel rails
- Usually needs two coats for full opacity and an even finish
How to Use
Turn the radiator off and allow it to cool completely before starting. Clean the surface to remove grease, dust and any wax or polish residue. If you are painting over an existing glossy finish, lightly key it with fine abrasive paper so the new enamel has a surface to bond to, then wipe away the dust. Treat any rust with a suitable rust treatment and prime any bare metal before applying the topcoat.
Stir the paint well before use. Apply a thin, even coat with a good quality brush, working in the direction of any panel ridges and avoiding overloading the brush to prevent drips and runs. Leave the first coat to dry fully, then lightly key it again if a second coat is needed. Apply the second coat in the same way for a smooth, even satin finish. Allow the radiator to cure fully, typically 24-48 hours, before switching the heating back on so the enamel hardens properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between satin and gloss radiator paint?
Gloss gives a highly reflective, shiny finish, while satin gives a softer, lower-sheen look that shows fewer surface imperfections. Both use the same type of heat resistant radiator enamel, so the choice is mainly down to preference.
Can you paint a radiator with satin paint?
Yes, provided it is a dedicated radiator satin enamel like this one, formulated to withstand the heat a radiator produces without discolouring or losing adhesion over time.
How do you paint a radiator?
Turn the radiator off and let it cool fully, clean and lightly key the surface, treat any rust, then apply the enamel in thin, even coats with a brush, allowing each coat to dry fully before adding the next.
How long does radiator paint take to dry?
This enamel is typically touch dry within a few hours and recoatable the next day. Allow around 24-48 hours for a full cure before turning the radiator back on.
Can you use Johnstone's wood and metal paint on radiators?
General-purpose wood and metal paints are not designed to withstand sustained radiator heat and can discolour or fail over time. This dedicated radiator enamel is the more reliable choice for radiators specifically.
Can you paint radiator pipes with this?
Yes, this enamel is also suitable for pipework, giving a neat, matching satin finish when applied carefully with a brush.
