Description

GT85 Multi-Purpose Spray is the lubricant, penetrant and water displacer trusted by cyclists, DIYers, mechanics and trade professionals since 1985. One 400ml aerosol can lubricates metal and composite parts, cleans off mud, oil and dirt, and leaves behind a long-lasting protective coating against rust and corrosion. It has a light, non-oily finish with a distinctive fresh smell rather than a heavy petroleum odour, so it will not leave bike frames, tools or fittings feeling greasy to the touch.

Key Features

  • Lubricates metal and composite parts for smooth, squeak-free movement
  • Cleans and removes mud, oil and dirt from tools, bikes and fittings
  • Protects against rust and corrosion with a long-lasting coating
  • Displaces moisture and dries out damp electrical connections
  • Loosens rusted or corroded nuts, bolts and fixings
  • Safe on carbon fibre bike frames and composite parts
  • Restores shine to metal and plastic surfaces
  • 400ml aerosol can with directional straw for precise application

How to Use GT85 Multi-Purpose Spray

Cyclists: spray onto a clean rag and wipe along the chain, or spray directly between the inner and outer cable to lubricate and displace water. Use a rag to floss gently between cassette sprockets and to wipe the front and rear derailleurs for long-lasting protection. A light wipe-over with a rag also gives the frame a protective shine.

DIYers: spray onto hinges, locks, garden tools, bike locks and anything else that squeaks, sticks or has started to rust. Leave for a minute on stubborn or corroded fixings before working them loose.

Mechanics and trade: use on wheels, nuts, bolts, hinges, fuel caps and workshop tools such as drills, hammers and saws. Spray onto electrical connectors and switches to displace moisture and help prevent misfires in damp conditions.

Always shake the can well before use, hold upright and spray from roughly 15 to 20cm away. Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid spraying directly onto braking surfaces, tyres or disc brakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GT85 used for?
GT85 is a multi-purpose spray that lubricates, cleans and protects metal and composite parts. It is widely used on bike chains, cables and derailleurs, as well as locks, hinges, garden tools, workshop tools and nuts and bolts that have seized or started to rust.

Is GT85 the same as WD-40?
No. GT85 and WD-40 are both multi-purpose sprays made for lubricating, cleaning and displacing moisture, but they are different products from different ranges within WD-40 Company. GT85 is formulated with cyclists and light mechanical maintenance in mind and is widely favoured for bike chains and cables, while WD-40 Multi-Use Product is the company's original general-purpose formula. Many users choose based on personal preference and the specific job at hand.

Does GT85 still contain PTFE?
No. GT85's formula was updated to remove PTFE, so current stock is PTFE-free. It still lubricates, cleans and protects in the same way, and it remains a popular choice for bike chains and general maintenance. If you have an older can with PTFE mentioned on the label, it is from a previous batch and can still be used as normal.

Is GT85 good for bike chains?
Yes. GT85 is one of the most widely used sprays for bike chain maintenance in the UK. It lubricates the chain, cleans off built-up grime, and leaves a light, non-sticky coating that will not attract as much road dirt as a heavier chain oil. For chains that see a lot of wet-weather riding, some cyclists prefer to follow it with a dedicated wet-weather chain lube for extra longevity between applications.

Is GT85 safe on rubber and carbon fibre?
Yes, GT85 is safe to use on carbon fibre bike frames and composite parts, and is generally fine on rubber components such as cable outers and grips. As with any spray lubricant, avoid direct contact with braking surfaces, tyres and disc brake rotors, since any lubricant residue can reduce braking performance.

Is GT85 a silicone spray?
GT85 is a multi-purpose lubricant and water displacer rather than a pure silicone spray. It is formulated to lubricate, clean and protect a wide range of metal and composite surfaces, making it more versatile than a dedicated silicone-only product.

Does GT85 prevent rust?
Yes. GT85 displaces moisture from metal surfaces and leaves behind a protective coating that helps prevent rust and corrosion from forming, making it useful for tools, fixings and bike components that are regularly exposed to damp conditions.

Can GT85 be used on locks and electrics?
Yes. GT85 is commonly used to free up stiff or sticky locks and hinges, and its moisture-displacing properties make it useful on damp electrical connectors and switches to help prevent misfires. Always allow it to dry before restoring power to any electrical circuit.
