Description
Description
The Purdy Joint Knife Carbon Steel 6 Inch is a wide, flexible bladed decorating tool used to apply and smooth joint compound (filler) over plasterboard seams, screw heads and larger flat repair areas. Its wider blade covers more surface per stroke than a standard putty knife, so bigger jobs take fewer passes and finish smoother and flatter, with less feathering needed before sanding. Purdy is an American decorating brand, part of Sherwin-Williams, well known for high quality brushes, rollers and prep tools used across the trade.
The 6 inch (150mm) blade is the size to reach for when you are working larger plasterboard seams, filling bigger dents and holes, or skimming a full section of wall rather than a small patch. The extra width means fewer overlapping strokes, which helps avoid ridges and gives a flatter, more even surface once the compound is dry and sanded. It is a popular choice with professional decorators for bigger repair jobs while still being light and manageable in one hand.
How to Use
- Load a generous but manageable amount of joint compound onto the wide blade.
- Hold the knife at a low angle, roughly 15 to 30 degrees to the wall.
- Draw the blade along the full length of the joint in one smooth, continuous stroke rather than short dabs.
- Apply in thin layers, letting each coat dry fully before building up the next.
- Feather the edges outward with light pressure so the repair blends into the surrounding wall.
- Once dry, use the blade flatter against the wall to knock back high spots before sanding.
- Wipe the blade clean between passes and rinse with water while the compound is still wet.

FAQs
Why choose a 6 inch joint knife over a 4 inch one?
The wider blade covers more area per stroke, which means fewer passes and a smoother, flatter finish on larger plasterboard joints and repair areas. It is the better choice once a repair is too big to comfortably finish with a narrower blade.
Is it suitable for skim coating a whole wall?
It is well suited to spot skimming, joint filling and larger patch repairs. For a full wall skim coat, a plasterer's trowel is generally used, but this knife is ideal for the filling and feathering work around it.
Does it come with a guarantee?
Yes. It carries Purdy's lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects.
