You painted your radiator brilliant white. A year or two later, it is not quite so brilliant. There is a faint cream tinge creeping in, more obvious at the top where the heat rises, and no amount of wiping seems to bring the original whiteness back. If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it and you are certainly not alone, radiator yellowing is one of the most common complaints we hear, and it has a genuine chemical explanation, along with a genuine fix.

Why does white radiator paint go yellow?

It is tempting to assume yellowing means the paint was faulty or applied badly, but in most cases it is simply chemistry doing what chemistry does. A few different factors are usually at play, often at the same time.

Heat exposure breaks down the resin

Radiators are, by definition, hot for months of the year, and traditional oil-based enamels contain resins that slowly oxidise when they are repeatedly heated and cooled. That oxidation process changes the way the surface reflects light, and the paint gradually shifts from a clean white towards a warmer, creamier tone. Radiators positioned under or near a window get a double dose of ageing, heat from below and UV exposure from above. What to do if your radiator has already yellowed
